Inconsistent user interfaces
Windows has always been a boiling cauldron of inconsistent user interfaces, from the bizarre Command Line window in Windows XP (yes, it's fixed in Vista) to the Windows 95 icons that still pop up from time to time in today's Vista. Here are a few of the inconsistencies that drive me crazy in Windows Vista.
In previous versions of Windows, every Control Panel applet was a standard Properties dialog (sometimes called a Property Sheet), ensuring
You see, Windows Vista isn't perfect. It's not even close to perfect. It's better than Windows XP is, of course, but it damn well should be: It benefits from five more years of experience and work. Being better is the minimum requirement. Whether Vista is enough of an improvement over XP to warrant your hard earned money is a subject I'm saving for my eventual review of the final shipping version of the product, but I'll give you a bit of preview now and say the answer may surp
Brad Goldberg, General Manager of Microsoft’s Windows Client Business Group.
Goldberg said on September 29 that Microsoft has “one more EDW” (External Developer Workstation) build of Vista slated before the product RTMs (releases to manufacturing). That means one more fairly widescale test release. Then it's soup, Goldberg said.
As of today, Microsoft believes it will make Vista available to businesses in November 2006 and release the product through all other channels in January 2007, Gol
FolderShare allows you to create a private peer-to-peer network that will help you to synchronize files across multiple devices and access or share files with colleagues and friends. You no longer need to send large files via email, burn them to CDs/DVDs and mail them, or upload them to a website. FolderShare allows you to share and sync important information instantly with anyone you invite, making it the perfect solution for personal or small business use.
How can I use it?
This page includes information to help you download Windows Vista RC2, a new test build. This build (5744) has a number of improvements and updates from previous builds, and has been through daily testing processes to refine quality and performance. We are making this release available for a limited time only (and only by download) in order to get broad distribution and testing in a variety of PC configurations.

The one thing I enjoy most about Macs is the dock on the bottom of the screen.
ObjectDock has a lot features and the skins that come with it look a lot better. Object Dock features Docklets, which are similar to Windows Gadgets and Mac Widgets. Docklets are made for Object Dock by the users (An SDK is linked on the site). In the picture below, the Weather Docklet is shown.
When you hover your mouse over it, the icon gets magnified just like the Mac dock. If you let the mouse sit over it
Before the advent of Reliability Monitor, Windows users had few ways in which to accurately determine how well their PCs were performing. Essentially, you would install the OS, a hardware device, or software application, or perhaps you would update the driver for an existing device. Any one of these actions could cause the PC to work better or, in the more memorable experiences, cause it to swoon wildly out of control, perhaps blue-screening down to a hard stop. In such cases, you would have to
Deciding which Vista version to install can be a difficult decision and can really limit what you can do with your system. Here are practical hints which should help a user decide which version to install. I decided to write this guide after installing 64-bit and 32-bit vista systems on several test boxes.
With the gaining popularity of 64-bit chipsets/processors, many users now have the ability to run either 64-bit versions (x64) or 32-bit versions (x86) of software and operating systems.
Microsoft could be ready to release Windows Vista to manufacturing as early as next week, a milestone that would signify the end of a protracted development process.
It could also set the company on a course to launch the operating system at the huge International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Chairman Bill Gates is to deliver the opening keynote Jan. 7.

Vista build 5840 includes a surprising number of brand-new and final icons, and a new set of final wallpapers, including a default wallpaper that's a variation of the Aurora "swoosh" that Microsoft has been using as a Vista identifier since it announced the branding in July 2005. There aren't any major functional changes in this build.
Oh, and that internal countdown clock? Last week, it was reset to count down to November 8, not to October 25. It's not clear, however, whether Microsoft will

1. UI built for the era of video and digital photography - It's not actually Microsoft's key selling point, but the thing that everyone will probably find the most useful about Vista is that photos, videos and music are not treated the same as Word documents any more. When you open a folder of photos, they come up as they'd appear in Google Picasa or Apple iPhoto. There's inbuilt basic photo editing. Music folders come up in columns of ID3 tags, a bit like iTunes. Finally, you don't have to rely

What's new in build 5536?
So what's new in 5536, you ask? Performance is better, even much better. (Though the three times performance improvement baloney you might have read elsewhere is not only impossible but untrue.) It does a much better job of finding and correctly installing device drivers: On my main desktop, even the sound driver worked automatically after the first Windows Update run, a first.

After you upgrade to Windows Vista and begin to explore, you might wonder where some of your old favorite features are, and how to perform the tasks you used to do in Windows XP. We've improved many features in Windows Vista and renamed a few programs to better reflect what they do. We’ve also moved some things around so they’ll be easier for you to use and find.
If you’re accustomed to Windows XP, this article will help make the transition to Windows Vista even easier for you.
Benchmarking in Vista is an extremely difficult task, thanks to features like SuperFetch designed to improve performance at the sacrifice of repeatability. We're in love with SuperFetch as a feature, but it does make our jobs a bit more difficult as we have to be very mindful of what has been cached into main memory and how that impacts the performance of our benchmarks. Testing difficulties under Vista are compounded by the fact that our major test suites don't work under the new OS. SYSMark an
Several sites are reporting the Vista RTM build number will be 6000.
A post made on the Microsoft newsgroups, reveals Windows Mail's final build number of 6000. Windows Mail is a integrated part of Vista, and does carry the same build numbers.
The latest test build was 5920.
